Yoga is magic

"Magic" is a word I love to use, but I reserve it for experiences that are so special, so inspiring, and so exceptional, that they can only be explained as magical. Music is definitely magical. Nature is magical. Sunsets are magical. Scuba diving is magical. Volunteering is magical. These are activities and experiences that may be simple, free, and accessible, but they are often powerfully transformative. They can blow your mind, rock your world, and even, change your life.

Today, I decided that yoga falls into the category of "magic". The class was Warm Restorative Yoga, in a heated studio. Restorative yoga emphasizes holding simple asanas (stretches) longer, and modifying for individuals' different abilities.

Our instructor, Camille, made sure that I, the new face in class, was able to follow along. The asanas were simple, yet effective. I took several home, for my own yoga practice. Furthermore, Camille had prepared a guided breathwork meditation for the end of class.

How was 1 yoga class magical? First, it was deceptively simple. Despite being out of regular yoga practice, I was able to perform each exercise without modifications. Afterward, I felt like I'd gotten deep stretches. But I did not feel like I had gotten my ass kicked. I felt invigorated and energized.

Second, I felt comfortable in the space. We were all encouraged to go at our own pace, and to customize our experience. A welcoming assurance like that facilitates physical expression. It erases any air of self-doubt or competition. I enjoyed the whole class, and the time flew.

Yes, an attuned and dedicated instructor like Camille makes all the difference. Yoga, alone, is powerful. Yoga can reshape your body, heal injuries, and relax a racing mind. Yoga is one of the most holistic therapies I know to exist. But... Yoga + a good instructor = MAGIC!

This may be an indication that it's "The Year of the Yoga Retreat". Yoga in the jungle? Yoga by the sea? Yoga on a mountain? What is your idea of the perfect yoga retreat? Let me know!

Check out our upcoming Retreats to see what's scheduled for the coming year. You deserve magic!
